Design a Head Mounted Display and Win an Oculus Rift!

To celebrate the one year(ish) anniversary of the Oculus Rift Kickstarter campaign, we’ve decided to give away a brand new Oculus Rift Dev Kit to one of our fabulous readers.

But instead of just giving it away, we’ve come up with a challenge…

We want to hear what you think the rift of the future will look like.

ps4-oculus-rift-conceptAre you a designer? A rapid-prototyper? Do you own a pen? It doesn’t matter, if you’ve got an ingenious concept for the HMD of the future, we want to hear from you. The more innovative the design, the better the chance you’ll have of bagging yourself a shiny new Rift, because who knows what the rift will look like even one  year from now?!

Submissions need to include high quality images, with as many angles of your concept as possible. The more thought that goes into the design, the better, and whilst Auto Cad designs are awesome, they by no means a prerequisite. We welcome any form of concept art from MS Paint (good luck) to Photoshop, but if it ain’t good it ain’t gonna win.

We want your imaginations to run wild, but there is one guideline: The HMD must incorporate a single flat panel display, just like the rift does. That’s the only rule.

All we need is your concept art, name, email address and contact number sent to before midnight on the 16th of September, 2013.

The first prize is a sealed Oculus Rift Dev Kit, along with a Steam key containing the Half Life series, Counterstrike series, Team Fortress 1 & 2, Portal 1 & 2, Left 4 Dead 1 & 2, DOTA, as well as a few others. The 2 runners-up will also receive Steam keys.

We’re also going to give away Infinite Crisis Beta keys to the first 50 entries.

We’ll be open for submissions from now until midnight (GMT) on the 16th of September, upon which day the winners will be decided by a panel of Judges and the Rift will be packaged and sent. The winners will be announced on the blog on the 20th September, 2013.

Participants can submit as many different concepts as they like.

Once again, all entries to be submitted to by midnight (GMT) on the 16th September, 2013.

By entering this competition, you agree to the terms and conditions found here.

Good Luck!

Are we talking feasible designs for the actual consumer rift, or just go mental and design “whatever” for the year 3000?

It can be as futuristic as you like, but remember that it has to incorporate a single LCD screen.

I’m sure that the HMDs of the future will favor retinal lasers and neurosensors over LCD screens, so in that respect the design will be routed in the present day.

      Good luck,

Can you tell us anything about the sizes involved? Eg, what are the dimensions of the screen? Where does the rest of the hardware go? We’ve got to create something pretty around a functional device, after all. 🙂

      Hi Adrian,

A bended panel is fine so long as you stick to just using one.

We’ve had plenty of entries so far, but there’s still lots of time left.

      Good luck!
