Star Citizen – Oculus-Ready

Star Citizen is a crowd-funded, space combat simulator from Chris Roberts – creator of classic titles Freelancer and the Wing Commander series. Like the Oculus Rift, it was funded through KickStarter, and will run on the CryEngine 3 game engine.

Roberts has stated himself that he’s making the game for enthusiasts, and that if those enthusiasts have spent the money to play their games on the Rift, they should dam well get their monies worth:

“I feel like I’m making a game for the enthusiast. If someone not only spent the money on a gaming PC to play Star Citizen, but also dropped 100, 200 dollars on some other equipment, I want to be able to say to them ‘You paid for it, you should be able to use it’…” (full interview here)

Good on you Chris.

With its cockpit, fixed viewing position and beautifully rendered space battles, this is a game that should translate well with the Oculus Rift. Space sims seem to be the most logical starting point for the Oculus Rift, with many of its early advocates weighing in with games of this nature.

VR space is going to kick ass.
